The
Story Behind
Potato City Country Inn
"POTATO CITY" was built in 1949
through the combined efforts of the Pennsylvania Potato Growers, packers, and related industries.
Dr. E. L. Nixon, former President Richard Nixon's uncle, is often given much
of the credit for the
beginning of "POTATO CITY". The building
was originally built as a monument to the Pennsylvania
potato industry and was truly a symbol of enthusiastic cooperation
and vision of all those involved. Much work was done here by Dr. Nixon cross breeding and developing new potatoes, and creating a cooperative effort between equipment manufactures, farmers, packers and consumers. Before
it eventually became a private enterprise Potato City was the scene
of many meetings, field days, banquets and other
functions related to the potato industry.
Potter County potatoes are well-known and marketed throughout the
United States and many foreign countries. Traveling
only a few miles north of the Inn, one can see some
of the most beautiful potato fields in Pennsylvania
and maybe purchase a sack or two from one of the
original founders of Potato City. In
visiting with them you may learn some more of the
interesting history of Potato City Country Inn.
